How Do I Remove an Over-the-Range Microwave?

Over-the-range microwaves are a popular choice for many households, thanks to their ability to free up counter space and blend into, or even enhance, a kitchen’s style. If you’re looking to remove or replace your over-the-range microwave, you can most likely do it by yourself, and it shouldn’t take too long.

This article provides the steps to remove an over-the-range microwave. Alternatively, you can hire a professional if you’re uncomfortable with the process.

Steps to Remove an Over-the-Range Microwave

Step 1: Pull the Range Out to Access the Microwave

A professional pulls a range away from its installation spot.

In some kitchen configurations, you may need to pull your range out to access the microwave above it with greater ease.

For an electric range, pull the unit out and disconnect the power supply.

For a gas range, pull the unit out a bit to access the gas hose and valve. Next, turn off the gas valve and then use a wrench to loosen the hose to pull it out the rest of the way.

Step 2: Unplug the Microwave

Next, disconnect the microwave from the power supply. The outlet might be located in a cabinet above the microwave. If applicable, feed the cord through a hole in the bottom of the cabinet to prevent it from getting caught during removal.

Step 3: Remove the Mounting Screws on Top of the Microwave

A small screwdriver and three screws

Most over-the-range microwaves are held in place by two to three screws on the bottom of the cabinet that connect to the unit. Remove these screws by placing a hand underneath the microwave’s front for support and using an electric screwdriver to turn the screws until they are out.

This step is easier to perform with the help of another person.

Step 4: Remove the Microwave from its Mounting Bracket

There is often a mounting bracket attached to the back of the microwave to hold it in place.

Support the microwave by holding its front with both hands. Tilt the microwave forward from the mounting bracket carefully to loosen the tabs on the bracket, and keep tilting until it’s at a roughly 30-degree angle.

While still supporting the microwave from underneath, lift it slightly to pop the tabs out from the mounting bracket at the bottom of the microwave.

This step is best performed with two people, especially since the unit will rip the mounting bracket off the wall and damage it if you let go at any point.

Step 5: Take Out the Microwave

As you lift the unit, step backwards slowly and carefully until it is removed from the opening.

Step 6: Remove the Mounting Bracket From the Wall

You can’t typically mount a new microwave on an existing bracket, so feel free to discard the bracket if you plan to install a new unit.

With an electric or regular screwdriver, remove the screws that affix the mounting bracket to the wall. Next, take the bracket off the wall.

Once you’ve completed this step, you have successfully removed your over-the-range microwave.
